Starbucks has a reputation of being a great employer. If you are interested in a position at Starbucks, the application process is fairly straightforward.
But perhaps you’re wondering if Starbucks drug tests? And what to expect from the application process? We looked into it, and this is what we found…
Does Starbucks Drug Test?
Starbucks can and does conduct drug tests on employees and potential employees. However, they only choose a very small number of pre-employee candidates to drug test, and on actual employees, hardly ever.

We also look at the things that might interrupt your application and what you can do about it.
How Do You Apply For A Job At Starbucks?
If you want to work at Starbucks, you can apply instore or online. However, the process starts with an online search on the Starbucks website for any positions currently available.
When you’ve found something you’re interested in, and which is on offer at a store near you, you can apply online or visit the store and fill out a paper application.
If the position you are applying for is a more advance managerial type of position, you’ll need to submit a formal resume and cover letter.
Starbucks will email you to confirm receipt of your application. This can take up to three weeks if you have only registered your interest for general work rather than for a specific position. Your application stays valid for 60 days, after which you can reapply.
If you’ve bid for an actual position, you’ll be notified of the outcome of your application regardless of whether you are successful or not, and if you are not, you will be invited to reapply for a different position.
What Is The Starbucks Application Process Like?
After you have submitted your application and received an emailed confirmation of Starbuck’s interest in you, the hiring process should take less than a week, although this can be longer if there are a large number of applicants to review.
Each process depends on the position you’ve applied for. Generally, all candidates are interviewed and the most appropriate candidate is then selected.
What Sort Of Background Checks Does Starbucks Do?
All candidates must agree to a background check as part of the application process. As a background check is only conducted if you have been offered a position with them, it is certainly good policy to submit to the check.
Starbucks background checks will look for a criminal record, a valid social security number, your driving and license records, and drug screening records.
The background checks take about one week to complete, and Starbucks claim to review each candidate on a case by case basis. If your background contains an issue that concerns you, it may not halt your application. Many people with a felony on their records still work at Starbucks.
Background checks also only go back so far. They do not search your entire life and hiring conditions relating to background checks differ from state to state anyway.
Why Do Starbucks Only Drug Test Some Candidates And Not Others?
Starbucks are not known for conducting regular and systematic drug tests, either during the application process or during a term of employment – unless there is good reason to do so.
The important thing to remember, however, is that they legally can conduct these tests, (it’s in your contract) and if they have good reason to do so, they will.
Reasons to proceed with drug testing can be based on suspicion, but you may also just be a random choice. If this is the case, it’ll most likely be during the application process and will follow a job offer, which could be yours, providing you pass the drug test.
The more heavy-duty your job tasks (if you are going to be working with machinery or driving for them) the more likely they are to select you for a drug test.
However, if a Starbucks employee is involved in a work place accident, Starbucks must conduct mandatory drug testing as part of standard hazard management.
What Drug Tests Does Starbucks Use?
Starbucks uses the standard 5-panel urine drug test, and the drugs they test for are specifically phencyclidine, opiates, amphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.
Starbucks do not announce ahead of time that they are going to conduct random drug tests, and each Starbucks store make drug testing decisions at their own discretion.
The drug results are usually returned within 24 to 48 hours.
How Do You Know If There Is A Problem With Your Starbucks Application?
The reasons for a delayed application response range from high number of applicants to mistakes made on your actual application.
However, if there is no actual position available when you submit a registration of interest to work, you may not hear anything for a while, but you should still receive confirmation of your application by email.
A high volume of applicants is the usual reason for this email to be delayed, however, be sure that your contact details are up to date and recorded accurately.
If you are simply unsuccessful for a position, you’ll receive an email or call from Starbucks to officially confirm this.
However, if you are invited for interview, you’ll then have to wait for your background check to be completed. This is when missing details in your application (such as a social security number) will cause delays.
After the interview, you may hear immediately, but you may have to wait another few weeks. Again, this depends on how many people are interviews and on the nature of the position.
What Can You Do If Starbucks Reject Your Job Application?
If you are not successful the first time you apply, Starbucks invite you to apply again as soon as an opening arises. You can also apply for more than one position.
The Starbucks website includes a useful question and answer page which answers common employment and career questions.
