Walmart is an American multinational retail company that runs a big chain of hypermarkets (in their terms “supercenters”), grocery, and departmental stores from the United States of America. Founded by Sam Walton in 1962, it now has 10,593 stores and clubs in 24 countries around the globe.
Walmart is well known for its options for customers to collect their products from their stores which we explore in this piece. Read on to find out more about the ins and outs of the process!
How Long Does Walmart Pickup Take?
After you have placed your order on Walmart’s online store, the products will be ready for pickup 4 hours from your order time. If you place an order after 4 pm, your order will only be available for pickup the following day. Additionally, you may have to wait longer if the pickup slots are full.
If you need faster delivery, look for items with the “free pickup” label on your order page at the Walmart online store.

What Are the Types of Walmart Pickups?
Walmart offers two different types of Pickup services, being the Store Pickup and Curbside Pickup. Both services are FREE as there are no delivery fees involved.
Store Pickup
With this option, you can make an order on the Walmart Online Store or the Walmart App on your phone. Once your order is ready, you will receive an email, text (if you ordered online), or notification (if you ordered from the app), and you can head to the store of your selection to collect your items.
Orders made before 4 pm will usually be collected on the same day with a 4-hour window of time, but orders made after 4 pm will be delivered the following day.
The pickup times from Walmart stores are between 8 am to 8 pm daily.
Curbside Pickup
With the Curbside Pickup option, you can make your order on the Walmart Online Store or the Walmart App on your phone as well. When your order is ready, you will receive a similar email, text, or notification (based on the medium used for your order). You can then drive to the dedicated parking space at the store.
Upon arrival, a Walmart employee will bring your ordered items and place them inside your vehicle with zero contact or interaction with you. Walmart prioritizes customer safety, especially in the climate of the COVID-19 pandemic. You will enjoy a free same-day pickup if you order before 3 pm.
The curbside pickup times from Walmart stores are between 8 am to 8 pm daily.
Items that are available for “Free Pickup” that doesn’t show “Today” will be shipped for free to the store of your choice. The waiting time for these items to be available is around 3-5 days from when your order was placed.
What Do I Need To Pick Up My Orders?
You can pick up your Walmart products or items from the following types of locations. You can locate the nearest Walmart near you using this store locater.
- Walmart Stores
- Walmart Neighborhood Marker Stores
- FedEx Office Locations (only available in limited locations)
Walmart Stores and Walmart Neighbourhood Marker Stores usually hold the items you have ordered at their service/store pickup area, which are usually located on the inside nearer to the back of each store. If you ordered any jewelry items, you could pick them up separately at the Jewelry Counter in the store.
You will need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID, the confirmation email, or a text alert displaying your order number in it. If you want faster service at the stores, print out your “ready for pickup” email and pass it to a store employee. They will scan the code in the email, which would help them quickly locate your package.
What Happens if I Don’t Pick Up My Walmart Orders?
If by some chance you miss the pickup window for your orders, Walmart usually holds the orders in-store for about 7 days (5 days at FedEx locations) from the original pickup date. After 7 days, the order would be cancelled.
You are entitled to a refund if you request within the 7-day window, and funds will reach your bank account within 3-5 business days via the same method of your payment.
For Walmart grocery or perishable goods orders, their store policy is to hold on to the orders only for the allotted pick-up date. If items are not collected on the same day, the groceries will be discarded.
Alternatively, if you are unavailable to collect your items up on said pick-up day, you can contact the store to reschedule to a later time of your convenience.
Conclusion…
Walmart has been one of the best retail companies over the years, expanding and growing their customer experience by introducing multiple types of methods for customers to purchase products from their stores.
As a result, you can choose one of their many pickup or shipping options according to your location, timing, price point, and what you need. If you select the normal pickup option, it will take around 4 hours for your order to be ready for pickup. If you order after 4 pm, your items will only be ready for pickup the following day.
If you want to save time on delivery or pickup services, look for items with “free pickup” when you order from the Walmart online store.
