If you have a job of any kind (unless it’s a home office) chances are that you will find yourself in a situation where you wake up feeling awful, and you are in no shape to go to work, and if you have something contagious, you don’t want any of your co-workers to feel like you.
In this case, it’s probably for the best if you stay at home until you get better to go back to work, but how do you notify your superiors that you are not feeling well?
If you happen to work at Target and you find yourself in this situation, then here is everything you need to know when you have to call in sick before the store opens.
How To Call in Sick At Target Before Store Opens
If you are not feeling well then you should stay home, but you have to do things the right way, which includes calling in sick. The best moment to do this is about two hours before the store opens.
To call in sick, all you need to do is call your store and ask to speak to the Leader-On-Duty (LOD.) If the store hasn’t opened yet, you will have the option at the end of the message to force a call through to the store if you are a team member calling out for your shift.
If you need to find the number of your store you can find it on Google or the Target website.

What Is Target’s Call Out Policy?
Target allows their employees to call out once a week and in some cases, you can even call out twice a week however, if you abuse this policy too much the LOD will probably give you a warning so make sure not to do this very often unless you have a good reason to do so.
You also have to remember to call at least 2 hours before your shift, your call will be recorded and you must give a good reason why you can’t go to work that day. Most of the time you will do this to call in sick but they will accept other reasons.
Also keep in mind that if you are just starting, try to avoid this at all costs, while it’s not by law, it would be better if you don’t call out before your first 90 days since that is the probation period, after that, you may be able to get away with it a bit more since they already know you are a valuable employee.
Can You Call Out The Day Before at Target?
You are allowed to call until 2 hours before your shift begins, however, if you can call before that, then it will allow the store to be more prepared without you.
Unfortunately, a lot of the time being sick isn’t something that you see coming, so don’t worry if you have to call in sick the same day.
Can Target Fire You For Calling in Sick?
Yes you can get fired but not just because of being sick, that would be considered unethical towards their employees, however, if you as a worker, abuse the policy by calling in sick way too many times, or for some reason you are caught lying then yes, of course, it can get you fired.
That is why you need to remember a few things to do things the right way:
- Did you give your notice with enough time?
- Did you abuse by asking for too many days off?
- Have you had any other problems at work?
- Have you been working for more than 90 days at target?
If you have been a great employee, then you give them no reason to fire you, so if you become a model employee you will be rewarded with more than just your paycheck allowing you to be stress-free during sick times or any other emergencies.
Even if you want to think about the worst scenario, which would be assuming that you have been fired, or threatened with being fired, the best course of action is to get in writing the termination clause. Sometimes as an employee, you may feel that you are right and the LOD is wrong.
In this case, you need to talk to a higher power which would be the Store Manager, not just a team lead. If the issue goes even further, and you feel the SM has wronged you, speak with the district. Remember to have a good reason and greater evidence that you have been wronged, otherwise, it’s a lost cause.
So remember if you are a good employee, it’s not in their best interest to fire you. According to Deloitte data:
If you invest weeks of time and effort into onboarding only to see an employee quit six months later, you’ve essentially wasted all of those resources. If this happens multiple times per year, the financial impact can be devastating.

Conclusion…
Calling in sick before the store opens is a very easy process, but you need to remember that while Target’s policy allows you to do this several times, it doesn’t mean you should abuse the rules, you will get a bad reputation and maybe even get fired due to that careless behavior.
If you feel very sick and unable to work, call as soon as possible and give them a good reason for your absence, if you have been doing a good job, you will not be affected in any way by this small inconvenience.
Just remember to follow the rules and you will be rewarded with patience and understanding when you need it.
