What Is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is the name of a system. It is not itself a credit card. Rather it’s a mobile digital wallet and payment service that is offered by Apple Inc. It allows users to make payments (using their phone) in person, through an ap, or online.
Apple Pay is only available on Apple devices, and it resides in your phone in the form of a digital copy of your credit card (s). It can be used anywhere that accepts contactless payments.
This is because Apple Pay is simply using a technology (called NFC technology) that is already in place.
Users assume (and Apple Inc hope) that they can use Apple Pay anywhere they shop, and in theory this is true. However, first of all, the user needs to set Apple Pay up on their phone, and the store has to adopt and approve Apple Pay as an acceptable form of payment.
This also means that participating aps and websites must adopt the Apple Pay API, or “application programming interface” which will allow “talk” between the two applications.
Some stores and chains (such as Walmart, for example) do not accept Apple Pay, and this is because they are committed to other forms of digital pay systems.
Is It Better To Use Apple Pay?
Apple Inc claim that Apple Pay is quicker, more convenient, and above all, more secure than other forms of payment.
Apple Pay was designed to replace the need for carrying around a bunch of physical credit cards. This meant you only need to pull out your phone (rather than searching through your entire wallet or bag) to make a purchase.
If you use Apple Pay, the cashier will not see your credit card number, your name, an address, or any other personal information, making it more secure than traditional payment methods.
The system is easy and simple to set up, and Apple insist that the instore checkout process is pretty streamlined too.
All you have to do is make sure the store (or website) displays the Apple Pay icon at checkout.
How Do I Know If I Can Use Apple Pay?
Simply look for the Apple Pay icon wherever you shop. It looks like an apple with the word “Pay” right next to it and both enclosed in a rectangle with rounded corners. The icon is always the same size and always in black and white, and always with a clear space around the mark.
Apple don’t allow merchants to alter the format, design, or colour of their icon, so you’ll always be looking for the same little icon.
Apple also encourage stores to advertise their adoption of the use of Apple Pay. This means that if you’re a member, hopefully you’ll receive a message, an email, a banner, or some form of announcement of the news.
What Forms Of Payment Are Accepted At Menchie’s?
Menchie’s accepts Visa card payments, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover for all online cake orders and purchases. In-store, you can use any of these with the addition of cash, debit cards, and/or store gift cards.
Note that you cannot use store gift cards for online purchases at Menchie’s. Also note that on the Menchie’s website, there is no mention of Apple Pay as a digital payment option.
Apple Support say that some stores may display the symbol on their card readers and point of sale terminals but may not be actually set up to accept the apple Pay form of contactless payments.
They advise that if you can’t use Apple Pay at a store that is displaying the payment symbol, to let them know.
How Do I Use Apple Pay?
First of all, when you’re in a retail store and approaching a point-of-sale system, look for the Apple Pay icon.
You’ll have to authenticate the app on your phone with either face ID or touch ID. Tap your default credit card or tap to choose an alternative card. Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see a “Done” icon and a tick on the display.
A completed payment is confirmed with a vibration and a beep.
