Winter is coming, and so are the Amazon orders for Christmas. But as we get caught up in the festive enthusiasm, we may accidentally purchase the wrong item and only realize it after some time.
When that happens, you may ask yourself: if you cancel an order on Amazon are you still charged? How does Amazon’s cancellation policy work?
Don’t worry because we’ve laid out everything you need to know about Amazon’s cancellation policy and how to cancel an Amazon order.
If You Cancel An Order On Amazon Are You Still Charged?
Amazon does not charge you for canceling orders before they’re shipped, including orders from third-party sellers or orders bought via reward points. Moreover, Amazon will fully refund a purchase if you cancel it before it’s been shipped.
Depending on your chosen payment method, the refund will show up in your account within 3 to 30 business days.
What Is Amazon’s Cancellation Policy?
Amazon allows customers to cancel physical items or orders that haven’t entered the shipping process. In other words, you can cancel an order as long as its status is still “Pending” on the order page. Moreover, there are no additional charges for canceling Amazon orders.
However, you cannot cancel individual items purchased as part of a discounted bundle. If you do that, Amazon will treat the bundle as one item and cancel the entire bundle altogether.
Amazon will send a confirmation email upon successful cancelation of an order. Then, you can check the cancelation status through email, the Amazon app, or the website itself.
Amazon will also issue a complete refund within 3 to 30 business days, depending on the payment method. The refund is also applicable to orders paid via Amazon reward points or Amazon gift cards.
Can You Cancel An Order After It’s Shipped?
You usually cannot cancel orders that have already been shipped. If you cancel an order after it’s been shipped, the seller will contact you, from which you have two options: return the item or request a refund.
While you may not be able to cancel an order after it’s shipped, you can still cancel the delivery. You can do so by following these steps:
- Log into your Amazon profile
- Go to Your Orders
- Select Track package
- Select Cancel this delivery
You can only cancel the delivery if the order is fulfilled by Amazon. For orders fulfilled by third-party sellers, you can either refuse the package or return it through Amazon’s Online Returns Center.
That said, Amazon’s customer service is one of the best globally and is the main reason why Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer.
You can try contacting Amazon’s customer service to cancel an order even after it’s shipped. Amazon’s customer service may go above and beyond and cancel your order depending on the item and the seller.
You can contact Amazon’s customer service by dialing 1-888-280-4331 (toll-free number) or 1-206-922-0880 (international number).
Note: You can return most new or unopened items sold and fulfilled by Amazon within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Please refer to Amazon’s Return Policy for a complete list of returnable and non-returnable items.
How To Cancel An Amazon Order After It’s Delivered
Assuming you forgot to cancel the order or cancel the delivery, and the UPS driver is hours away from your house, what should you do? There are two ways to go about this: return the item or refuse Amazon’s delivery.
Both methods are, in essence, canceling the order after it’s shipped. Most importantly, Amazon will still provide a full refund though it’s subject to Amazon’s refund policy.
Returning the item
If your order has already been delivered, you can return the item to Amazon and accept a full refund. However, whether the item is returnable or not depends on Amazon’s return policy. You can return most new or unopened items sold and fulfilled by Amazon within 30 days of delivery and receive a full refund,
Do note Amazon does not accept returns for every purchase, including software, groceries, and jewelry. So, be sure to refer to Amazon’s full list of unreturnable items before you attempt to return anything.
Refusing the package
You can skip the hassle of returning an item by outright refusing the delivery at the doorstep. It doesn’t cost you anything, and Amazon and the delivery carrier won’t charge you anything.
Furthermore, you can get refunded for refusing the package, although terms and conditions apply.
However, we strongly recommend you to use this method as a last resort because the seller will bear the shipping cost. Vendors on Amazon pay for many things just to deliver an item to your doorstep. For example, packing, storing, delivery, among many other expenses.
If you abuse this method of refusing deliveries, you may run your favorite Amazon seller out of business. When that happens, the person who ultimately suffers is you because you won’t be able to purchase their items anymore.
For more information about Amazon’s policy on package refusals, please contact their customer service at 1-888-280-4331 (toll-free number) or 1-206-922-0880 (international number).
What To Do If You Accidentally Canceled Amazon Order
If you accidentally cancel an Amazon order, you cannot undo it and must reorder the item. You can easily reorder your item by following these simple steps:
- Log into your Amazon account
- Select Returns & Orders on the top-right
- Find the item you’d like to reorder
- Select the yellow Buy it again button under the item
If the Buy it again button does not appear, it could mean that the item is out of stock. You must then repurchase the item from the original information page when you first bought it.
Conclusion…
If you cancel an order, are you still charged? The answer is that you are not charged any fees for canceling an Amazon order. Furthermore, Amazon reimburses a full refund if you cancel your order before it’s shipped.
You can still cancel an order after it’s shipped by canceling the delivery, although you can only cancel delivery for orders fulfilled by Amazon and not third-party sellers.
If the order has already been delivered, you can return the item and request a refund. However, keep in mind that returns are subject to Amazon’s return policy and that not all items are returnable.
