What Is Dole Whip?
Dole Whip is s a soft serve dairy-free frozen dessert created by Dole Food Company in 1984. It was originally made in a pineapple flavour, although there are eight more flavours offered now.
Dole Whip became famous through a collaboration between Disney and Dole in 1986, which also gave us the legendary Dole Whip float: a Dole Whip served with pineapple juice.
Then in 1997, Kent Precision Food Groups took over the license rights and improved the texture of the “whip” with their own company soft serve machine. Since then, both Dole and Disney have shared a Dole Whip make-at-home recipe for enthusiastic fans.
Dole Whips are available in a range of flavours, flavour combinations, and dessert options, including Dole Whip swirls, Float swirls, and loaded dessert bowls.
The original Dole Whip is diary-free and vegan, however, some of the newer flavour combinations and dessert bowls may have (or be garnished with) dairy and non-vegan ingredients.
The Coconut Pineapple Dole Whip Swirl, for example, is not actually dairy free, and many Dole Whip outlets create Dole Whip treats blended with soft serve or garnished with chocolate.
Likewise, you’ll find a range of Dole Whip recipes made with custard, yogurt, or ice-cream.
Who Makes Dole Whip?
Dole Whip is made by the Dole Food Company and was introduced in 1984 at a National Restaurant Association show. When Dole Food Company took over as sponsor of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Dole Whip quickly attracted a cult following.
Disney goers first enjoyed the Dole Whip and the Dole Whip float before other flavors (cherry, mango, lemon, watermelon, orange, raspberry, strawberry, and lime) and combinations were introduced.
Since 2013, the original Dole Whip, as well as retaining its gluten and diary free status, has been made with solely vegan ingredients.
Disney’s published Dole Whip recipe in 2020 catered for both diary and non-dairy preferences, with some fans claiming it was therefore ‘not the real thing’.
Is Dole Whip Frozen Yogurt?
Dole Whip is not technically ‘frozen yogurt’, although copycat recipes have made similar successful ‘whips’ using frozen yogurt or ice cream. However, the original Dole Whip is made from pineapple juice, coconut oil, sugar, and a combination of stabilizers.
Dessert fans say that the Dole Whip recipe is amazingly easy to copy and very simple to ‘tweak’ with your own choice of ingredients.
Apparently, the most important two ingredients are frozen pieces of pineapple and coconut milk. And a really good food processor or blender.
Is Menchie’s Dole Whip Vegan?
The Dole Whip sold at Menchie’s is, according to Menchie’s, vegan, dairy free, and gluten free. In other words, it’s the real thing. It is not a froyo, or a frozen yogurt – you’ll find it listed under the “sorbet” section of the Menchie’s website menu.
So, if you click on Dole Soft Serve Pineapple Flavour, you’ll find all the ingredients and nutritional information next to a description of the product.

Can You Make Your Own Dole Whip?
Dole Whip fans have been concocting their own versions of the Dole Whip ever since it became legendary. There are a wealth of recipes on line: you just need to find one which suits your food choices, taste, and health needs.
One of the most popular is the Homemade Disneyland Dole Whip, made with coconut milk and frozen pineapple. This version is simple, fast, vegan and dairy free.
Basically, you need coconut milk, small pineapple chunks (frozen) and a food processor. And that’s it. 4 cups of pineapple chunks blended with 1 cup of coconut milk will make 4 nice servings.
Remember: the pineapple needs to be frozen, and you’ll have to blend in stages. Dole Whip is a thick and luscious treat!
If you prefer the dairy version, simply replace the coconut milk with ice-cream or yogurt.
